Solution:
Choosing the right shade or adopting a shade if you've changed the lamp's location is easy to do if you just follow a few simple steps.

1. The placement of your lamp can have a lot to do with choosing a shade. A lamp that's placed on a shorter table will need a smaller shade then the same lamp placed on a higher table or shelf. It all depends on how much lamp you'll see. The rule for table lamps is that the bottom edge of the shade is low enough so that you don't see the socket or the harp.

2. If you move a lamp and the shade looks softly off size but not enough to replace it, try changing out the harp to a different size. The harp can raise or lower the location of the shade.

3. If you only need to move it slightly, you can get a lamp riser, which will raise the shade slightly, but they can be hard to find so a plain old washer or a nut will work well too.

4. Another factor to consider is how high the wattage is in your bulb. High wattage bulbs need wider openings to allow the heat from the bulb to escape. If your wondering whether your current shades are safe, turn your lamp on for twenty minutes or so. Turn it off for five minutes and feel the shade. If it's still hot, you need a shade with a wider opening or a lower wattage bulb.
