Things You'll Need
Circuit Tester
Circuit Analyzer
Continuity Tester
Solution:
Installing a gfci or changing a light switch? I have some indispensable gadgets that you can't do without.

1. A circuit tester is a simple "Y" shaped tool with a light and two leads. It is most often used to check to be sure electricity is off when making repairs. To use it, switch the power off at the circuit box and then touch the leads to wires to check for electricity. Check all wire combinations to make sure there is no electricity running through the line before you start working.

2. A circuit analyzer will test an outlet to be sure that it is wired correctly. It will indicate the problem if its not which can prevent serious electrical shock. To use it simply plug it in to an outlet. The analyzer will detect common improper wiring like reversed connections and open wires.

3. A continuity tester tests whether a circuit is complete. Make sure the power is off before you use this tool. If you have an extension cord that doesn't seem to be working, no problem, attach the small alligator clip to the plug's prong and insert the lead into the opposite end. If it lights up you know that the problem is with the outlet or the appliance. You can also use this for fuses or switches.
