PROJECT:
Stenciling
MATERIALS:
Stencil Paint
Stencil Brush
Stencil
Tape
Newspaper
Small Plastic Tub
|
SOLUTION:
Stenciling
is a really easy way to add character to walls,
furniture, and even fabrics.
STEP
1: Tape your stencil evenly to
your project.
STEP 2: Lay out a piece of
newspaper and a small plastic tub, and put a
small amount of paint into the tub.
STEP 3: Dip the tip of your brush
into the paint and gently dab the bristles on
the newspaper. This will ensure an even amount
of paint on the brush.
STEP 4: Carefully and sparingly
dab the stencil with the brush using an up and
down movement, and make sure that you keep your
brush at a right angle to the project so that
the bristles don't slip under the cut outs.
STEP 5: Once you've finished
a section, gently pull the stencil away from
the project and move it to the next section.
STEP 6: Repeat the process until
you've covered the entire area.

PROJECT:
Heavy Objects
MATERIALS:
Rope
Old Garden Hose
Pipe Insulation
Old Blankets
Belts
|
SOLUTION:
Moving
heavy objects can be awkward and frustrating,
but these simple ideas should
make the job a lot easier.
TIP
1: Always remember when you lift, bend at
your knees, not your waist. It makes lifting
easier, and you have a lot less risk of injury.
TIP 2: For a long flat item, like a tabletop,
tie the ends of a long rope together and loop
it over the corners, then lift. The rope will
do a lot of the work and you can use one hand
to carry and the other to steady and guide.
TIP 3: If the item is sharp, like a pane
of glass, slit a garden hose lengthwise and slip
it over the ends of the glass. Then you have
a cushion for your hands. You can also try some
pipe insulation.
TIP 4: For a heavy piece with legs that
could snap off, spread an old blanket or throw
rug on the floor and tip the item on its side.
Then, just pull the rug along the floor. You'll
have more control, and you'll protect the legs.
TIP 5: To move a large area rug, roll
it up and loop a couple of belts around it near
the middle. Not only will the belts hold the
rug together, but they provide easy handles for
lifting!
There you go; some ways to make moving those heavy
objects easier.

PROJECT:
Working Safely
MATERIALS:
Safety Light
Bendable Flashlight
Fire Extinguisher
|
SOLUTION:
With
any project, safety should be your number one
concern. Here are a few tips to keep you safe
while you're working.
TIP
1: Work in well lit areas. A handy safety
light can be moved easily and gives off lots
of light so you can see exactly what you're
doing, and both hands are free. If you're
working in a spot too tight for the safety light,
try a wraparound flashlight.
TIP 2: A lot of the chemicals you may
use in repairs and refinishing are flammable,
keep a fire extinguisher close by your work
area, and always have plenty of ventilation.
TIP 3: Buy good heavy duty extension
cords, and always plug them into a grounded
outlet. Also, tie a loose knot where you plug
your tool into the extension. This way if you
move too far the cord won't pull apart which
can be really dangerous.
TIP 4: When using power tools, always
wear safety glasses and ear covers.

PROJECT:
Easy Storage
MATERIALS:
Wooden Shelf
Utility Shelving
Extra Clothes Rod
Silverware Organizer
Plastic Shoeboxes
|
SOLUTION:
Storage
space - it seems like you can never have enough.
I have some great ideas to help.
TIP
1: Look for potential storage space
when you buy furniture. A great wooden trunk
stores extra blankets, games or clothes and
can double as a coffee table!
TIP 2: If you have a closet that
you don't really use for clothes, fill it
with shelves. Attach brackets into the sides
of the closet and lay shelves across.
TIP 3: If you have a deep closet,
pull the clothes rack closer to the front
and put some utility shelving behind the clothes,
or use two bars for twice as much storage.
TIP 4: Use an old silverware organizer
in the bathroom or bedroom to organize brushes,
combs, bobby pins, razor blades and all sorts
of other things.
TIP 5: If your shoes are in a big
pile in the bottom of your closet, buy some
plastic shoe boxes. They're inexpensive,
shoes fit perfectly inside and you can stack
them neatly in your closet or slide them under
the bed.
